"The world was created through ten divine utterances" (Sayings of Eliezer, Chapter 3) - teaching us that words have the power to create worlds. The energy hidden in words can create, or, if used wrongly, destroy.

It is known that deeds are aroused by words and hearts are aroused by deeds: action begins with communication and culminates in the heart. This issue deals with promoting conversation on the subject of Israel, with the hope that communication and action will reinforce each other.

Mission Statement

Makom is the Hebrew word for place. It is also a name for God. Resonating with both the earth and the heavens, it symbolizes our efforts to renew the place of Israel in Jewish life. Through a network of labs, local leaders - in education, the arts and travel - are mentored to create the compelling content needed to build the field of Israel engagement for our times.

Israel is far too often presented only as a separate subject, rather than also being embedded in the culture of a school, camp, or other educational environment.

For me one of the great treasures of conversation is the unexpected. Not the outrageous, nor the gaudy, but the comment that is the produce of a fertile mind absorbed in the messiness of reality.

Community Initiative

Lay leadership is one of the critical places to start the conversation on changing the culture of engagement with Israel.

A modern Israeli song blends a Biblical imperative with a contemporary punch line. It starts “kum v’hithalech ba’aretz,” – "rise and walk through the length and breadth of the land."
